Released on May 5, 2003, Think Tank is Blur’s seventh studio album and the band’s most experimental and politically charged record. It marks a significant departure from their Britpop roots, incorporating elements of electronic music, world music, and lo-fi rock. The album was heavily influenced by Damon Albarn’s growing interest in African rhythms, hip-hop, and dub, as well as his involvement in the early days of Gorillaz. Think Tank was recorded in various locations, including Morocco, London, and Devon, and reflects a diverse, globe-trotting sound. It is also notable for the absence of guitarist Graham Coxon on most tracks, as he left the band early in the recording process, contributing only to Battery in Your Leg. As a result, the album leans heavily on atmospheric textures, electronic beats, and Albarn’s introspective songwriting. Despite these changes, Think Tank was critically acclaimed, debuting at #1 on the UK Albums Chart and earning a Mercury Prize nomination.
