Released as a free mixtape on May 11, 2014, and later re-released on streaming services in 2021, Faces is one of Mac Miller’s most experimental and introspective projects. The 24-track mixtape showcases Mac at his most unfiltered, diving deep into themes of addiction, fame, mortality, and self-destruction, all while delivering some of the most intricate and psychedelic production of his career.
Sonically, Faces blends jazz, soul, and boom-bap influences with hazy, dreamlike instrumentals, featuring production from Mac himself (under the alias Larry Fisherman), as well as Thundercat, 9th Wonder, and ID Labs. Lyrically, the mixtape is both a stream-of-consciousness and a confessional, with standout tracks like Diablo, Here We Go, and Colors and Shapes painting a vivid picture of Mac’s struggles and artistic genius. Collaborations with artists like Schoolboy Q, Earl Sweatshirt, and Rick Ross further elevate the project.
Though it was originally released as an underground cult favorite, Faces has since been recognized as one of Mac Miller’s most essential works—a raw and deeply personal reflection of an artist at a crossroads. More than just a mixtape, Faces is a journey through Mac’s mind, showcasing his evolution as both a lyricist and a producer, and standing as a haunting yet beautiful piece of his legacy.
