Originally intended as a solo project for Ian Anderson, A became a full Jethro Tull album upon its release in 1980. Marking a significant shift in the band's sound, A introduced more electronic elements and featured a new lineup, including violinist/keyboardist Eddie Jobson. The album combines progressive rock with synth-driven textures, reflecting the evolving musical landscape of the early '80s.
